1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a great initiative that will help your young children to begin to read. Since it has no official start date any child, from birth to entering kindergarten, can start anytime. The goal is simple; read a 1,000 books before they enter kindergarten. You can keep track of books read by worksheet copies from the library or by downloading an app to keep track of the books read and with the help of your library, reading 1,000 books will be a piece of cake.

How to get started:

  1. Inform Dudley Township Library that you want to start the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge.

  2. Read the book Thousand Books Before Kindergarten; A Promise, A Pledge. Then take the Pledge along with your child to start and finish the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge.

  3. Download the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten app, or get a book record from Dudley Township Library

  4. Start Reading!

It might sound daunting but its really not!  Any book that your child reads or listen to counts toward the goal.  This includes books that they hear at preschool, or at a relatives house. Also, you can repeat the same book multiple times.  If you only read 1 book a night; five times a week; for the whole year; you will read 260 books a year.  This means you could accomplish you goal in four years. Or if you read 3 books every night of the week; it will take just over a year.

For every 100 books read stop by the library for a sticker, a treat, and your child gets his/her name put up on our big balloon reading chart to mark his/her progress! Upon completion child with receive a copy of their favorite storybook and their picture in the Haskell Monitor- Chief newspaper!

Dudley Township Library can help you meet your goal. The books that are read at Wee Wigglers count toward your goal.
